Pepe Mel: 'I want to be a sporting mentor for Saido Berahino'

West Bromwich Albion manager Pepe Mel claims that he is trying to be a "sporting mentor" for Saido Berahino.

West Bromwich Albion manager Pepe Mel has claimed that he is trying to be a "sporting mentor" for Saido Berahino.

The 20-year-old forward has attracted unwanted headlines recently after clashing with teammate James Morrison before being pictured inhaling 'laughing gas' last month, and Mel admits that he is trying to give him advice on how to achieve success at the highest level.

"In the future I think he is going to be a really great player both for West Brom and for the English national side," the Spaniard told reporters. "He still has time to make errors and it is up to us as coaches to show him the right path.

"I'm trying to be his sporting mentor. I try to give him advice about what he should do on the pitch.

"I try to tell him what he needs to do in order to remain a top-level footballer for a long period of time."

Berahino has scored eight goals in all competitions this season.
