Watford top after beating Wigan Athletic

Troy Deeney scores twice as Watford beat Wigan Athletic 2-0 and move to the top of the Championship.

Watford have moved to the top of the Championship table by claiming a 2-0 win over Wigan Athletic this evening.

The hosts made a bright start to the game and inside the opening 10 minutes Gaetan Bong curled a strike narrowly over the bar.

It was Watford who threatened soon after, but Adlene Guedioura could only fire his long-range effort straight at the keeper.

The visitors came even closer midway through the first half as Troy Deeney connected with Gianni Munari's cross and saw his header saved by Ali Al-Habsi.

Moments later Wigan had the ball in the net when Leon Clarke raced on to Jermaine Pennant's through-ball and slotted home, but his effort was ruled out for offside.

Three minutes before half time Deeney almost gave Watford the lead, but he could only poke Guedioura's cross straight at the keeper as the two sides went into the break on level terms.

Watford came out strongly following the restart, and nine minutes into the second half they broke the deadlock when Deeney headed in from Guedioura's cross.

Joel Ekstrand almost grabbed a second for the visitors when he pounced on a loose ball inside the box, before firing wide of the far post.

In stoppage time Watford were given the chance to seal the win as a penalty was awarded for Emmerson Boyce's foul inside the box on Fernando Forestieri.

Deeney stepped up to take the spot kick and he made no mistake with a confident finish that wrapped up the points and made it eight wins out of 10 for the new league leaders.
