Jermain Defoe strikes in Toronto FC win

Toronto FC saw off New York Red Bulls, thanks to goals from Jermain Defoe and Luke Moore.

Ex-England striker Jermain Defoe showed national coach Roy Hodgson what he will miss at this summer's World Cup, as his well-hit strike helped Toronto FC beat the New York Red Bulls.

The former Tottenham Hotspur frontman scored the opening goal of the game when he latched onto Bradley Orr's pass before unleashing an unstoppable effort that found the top corner of Luis Robles's net.

New York looked for a response when Thierry Henry floated free kick needed to be swatted away by a watchful Joe Bendik just after half time.

Bradley Wright-Phillips, who scored a hat-trick for the Red Bulls in their 5-4 home defeat to Chicago Fire last week, struggled to rekindle his goal scoring form, as he blazed over when presented with a decent opportunity to equalise on 62 minutes.

Henry came closest to snatching a point for New York, when he dragged his shot wide with 23 minutes left on the clock.

In the end, Toronto made sure of the three points when former Aston Villa player Luke Moore netted for the Canadians in stoppage time.
