David Villa scores equaliser for Melbourne City on A-League debut

David Villa scores on his A-League debut to earn Melbourne City a 1-1 draw with Sydney FC in their opening match of the season.

Melbourne City have opened the new A-League season with a 1-1 draw against Sydney FC after David Villa scored the equaliser for the visitors.

James Brown came close to giving the visitors the lead inside the opening five minutes when Damien Duff pulled the ball back to him on the edge of the box, but his effort was kept out by the crossbar.

Andrew Redmayne soon came under pressure in the Melbourne goal down the other end as Corey Gameiro unleashed a powerful shot, but the keeper did enough to prevent the Sydney goal.

As the first half progressed, it was Melbourne who looked the more like opening the scoring, with Mate Dugandzic seeing a shot saved, while Patrick Kisnorbo's rebound was blocked.

Shortly after the restart, the home side broke the deadlock when a through-ball fell to Gameiro, who curled the ball just beyond Redmayne to give Sydney the lead.

Alex Brosque had a chance to double Sydney's lead four minutes later as he played his way into the box, but he took too long to get the ball away, allowing Iain Ramsay to make the block.

On-loan striker Villa came off the bench to make his A-League debut for City, and marked his first appearance with a goal as he collected the ball from Duff before slotting it into the bottom corner.

Aaron Mooy tried to set up a winner for Melbourne inside the final 10 minutes, but his cross failed to find any of his teammates.

Sydney also came close to going back in front in the final moments as Terry Antonis lashed a volley onto the crossbar before Max Burgess fired the rebound wide, ensuring that the sides finished level.
