Jermain Defoe excited by prospect of breaking Premier League scoring record

Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe admits that surpassing former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler's Premier League goalscoring record would be "special".

Jermain Defoe has described the prospect of surpassing Robbie Fowler's Premier League goalscoring record as "special".

The 34-year-old Sunderland striker scored his seventh league goal of the season in a 3-0 win over Hull City on Saturday, moving him onto 150 top-flight goals.

Defoe, who scored 15 league goals last season, now sits 13 behind the all-time Premier League record, held by former Liverpool and Manchester City forward Fowler.

When asked by Sky Sports News about the prospect of breaking the record, Defoe said: "It would be nice.

"Someone like Robbie Fowler, in my opinion one of the most natural finishers that this country has produced. I remember his goals, nice clean finisher, not much backlift. If I can go above him it would be special.

"It's a long way to go but I'll just take them as they come. I always believe that each game I play I'll get a chance or half-chance and it's just down to me to take it."

Defoe began his professional career in 1999 at West Ham United after youth spells at Charlton Athletic and the Hammers academy.
