Peter Odemwingie raring to go following lengthy layoff

Peter Odemwingie admits that he is happy with his current progress, as he closes in on a return to action following an eight-month spell on the sidelines.

Stoke City forward Peter Odemwingie has revealed that he is 'feeling good' as he continues his road to recovery following a lengthy layoff this season.

The Nigeria international has been out of action since suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury in the Potters' 1-0 victory at Manchester City in the opening month of the campaign.

Having returned to training this week, Odemwingie is now hopeful of getting some minutes under his belt in the coming month.

"You don't know what to expect after being out for long but I feel good," the Nigeria international, who is in the final months of his Stoke contract, told BBC Sport. "I've started regaining the confidence all over again and it's just a case of keeping that going.

"The more you train and get involved the more you get into a rhythm and the more confident you feel, that's just how it works. It's obvious I am approaching the end of my contract but getting fit again has always been the priority.

"I've scaled the hurdles before me to get here, what's important now is to hopefully get a few games and we'll see what happens. I'm just happy with the progress so far and hopefully if I can make a contribution I believe it will happen on its own."

Prior to his spell on the sidelines, Odemwingie had scored 15 goals for Stoke upon joining from Cardiff City in January 2014.
