Despite it being their first ever Cup final, St Johnstone started the stronger and went close to a spectacular opener just before the quarter-hour mark when James Dunne's volley from 25 yards was tipped over by Radoslaw Cierzniak.

The Perth side then almost took a fortunate lead when David Wotherspoon's shot hit Dundee defender Gavin Gunning and deflected into the chest of Cierzniak, who was lucky to keep it out.

Dundee's best chance of the opening half came after 31 minutes when they worked the ball well out to Andrew Robertson, whose low cross was guided against the inside of the post by Ryan Dow.

St Johnstone took the lead moments before the half-time whistle when Anderson rose well at the back post to head a corner into an unguarded net after Cierzniak had left his line and missed the ball.
