The hosts almost took the lead after just six minutes when Christian Eriksen's attempted cross was deflected towards goal by Marcos Alonso, forcing Vito Mannone to tip it over the top.

Sunderland came close in the 15th minute as Adam Johnson's delivery was met by Wes Brown, whose powerful header flew narrowly past the post.

Gus Poyet's side did have the lead moments later, however, as Vlad Chiriches gifted the ball to Lee Cattermole with a poor pass, allowing the midfielder to slot home his first goal for the club with Hugo Lloris out of position.

Harry Kane, Kyle Naughton and Emmanuel Adebayor all threatened to equalise for the hosts before Fabio Borini linked up with Cattermole to test Lloris with a low drive.

Spurs did level things up shortly before the half-hour mark, however, as Eriksen's cross picked out Adebayor to bundle the ball home in untidy fashion.

The hosts were ahead in the 59th minute as Eriksen again acted as the creator, sending a fine pass through to Kane, who slotted the ball past Mannone for his first ever Premier League goal.

Sunderland came close to restoring parity with 15 minutes remaining when Borini nodded the ball down for Ignacio Scocco, who fired a well-struck half-volley into the side-netting.

Spurs wrapped up the points just three minutes later, however, as Adebayor and Nacer Chadli combined to set up Eriksen, who picked out the bottom corner for a goal of his own.

The hosts made it four late on when Kane's weak effort snuck under Mannone but not over the line, allowing Adebayor to pounce and tap in his second of the night.

Things got even worse for the Black Cats as they shipped a fifth goal in stoppage time as Gylfi Sigurdsson capped off the scoring to give his side a comfortable three points.
