Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen concedes that his side benefited from a bit of fortune in their 1-0 win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has admitted that his side benefited from a "bit of luck" in their win over Sunderland.

Ryan Mason scored the only goal of the game to fire Spurs to their first win of the campaign at the Stadium of Light, but Mauricio Pochettino's were aided by the woodwork as Jermain Defoe and Jack Rodwell both saw their efforts hit the frame of the goal.

Vertonghen told Sky Sports News: "We approached the game in a positive way, were the better team and we deserved to win.

"Jermain Defoe had a few good chances and maybe we had a bit of luck."

Tottenham are now 12th in the Premier League after five matches this season.
