Dawson makes his first Premier League start since February - and he captains Spurs.

Emmanuel Adebayor begins his three-match suspension and is replaced in attack by Defoe, who has scored in four of his last seven games against the Hammers.

Lloris keeps his place in goal following his man-of-the-match display in Thursday night's 0-0 draw with Lazio. Meanwhile, Dembele, who has not featured in a Premier League game since October 7, is likely to make an appearance as a second-half substitute.

West Ham's starting XI is unchanged from Monday night's 1-1 draw with Stoke City.

Yossi Benayoun remains on the sidelines with a side strain, but winger Matt Jarvis returns to the squad after overcoming a shin injury.

West Ham have failed to score in five of their last seven Premier League games against Spurs.

The sky above White Hart Lane is overcast, with light drizzle expected for the duration of the match. The pitch is in excellent condition and the moist surface should play right into the hands of the hosts' passing game.

This match is a complete sell-out and both sets of supports are contributing to a fantastic pre-match atmosphere.

The players are on the pitch and kickoff is just six minutes away.

Andre Marriner is today's referee, while the returning Mark Clattenburg is fourth official.

West Ham get the game underway.

Dempsey plays a lofted through ball over the top to Defoe, who cuts in onto his right foot before firing high and wide from 20 yards.

Vertonghen plays a neat one-two with Bale down the left before firing in a low cross to Defoe, whose touch is poor allows Reid to clear.

Sandro wins the ball back in his own half and then plays in Defoe, but the England striker's shot is tame and easily held by Jaaskelainen.

Bale turns away from O'Brien and is hacked down by the Hammers right-back. The referee correctly issues a yellow card and Spurs have a free-kick on the left touchline, in line with the edge of the 18-yard box.

Bale's cross is headed away by Carroll to Huddlestone, who volleys wide from the edge of the area.

Spurs hit the woodwork! Bale loses his balance, but manages to get a fierce shot away from 25 yards. It thunders back off the underside of the crossbar. Dempsey gets to the rebound, but his header is comfortably held by Jaaskelainen.

Chance for Spurs! Bale finds Dempsey through the middle. The American tries to curl the ball into the bottom corner from 18 yards, but Jaaskelainen makes a good save.

Dempsey shoots well wide from long range.

Dave Sexton, who made 74 league appearances for West Ham between 1952 and 1955, has died aged 82. Click here for full story.

Great enterprise by Bale! The Welsh winger comes deep and collects the ball wide on the left. He then dribbles the width of the pitch and wins a corner off McCartney on the right.

Dawson throws himself at Huddlestone's delivery, but the England defender fails to make contact and West Ham clear.

Spurs were rampant during the opening 10 minutes, but there has since been a little bit of a lull in the game. The hosts are still well on top, though.

Spurs break away down the right with Lennon, who is brought down on the halfway line by Noble. Yellow card for the Hammers midfielder.

West Ham make an early substitution. Maiga, who does not appear to be injured, is replaced by Jarvis.

Defoe needlessly goes in late on Reid and is rightly shown a yellow card.

West Ham pump a long ball into the Spurs penalty area, which Reid flicks on and Lloris punches behind for a corner.

After a brief game of head tennis, Spurs clear.

Huddlestone is encouraged by the crowd to shoot from 30 yards. He obliges, but his effort goes high and wide.

Goal for Spurs! - Jermain Defoe - Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 West Ham United

What a goal! Defoe receives the ball tight on the right touchline near the halfway line. He then embarks on a superb solo run, before unleashing a power finish, which beats Jaaskelainen at his near post from 25 yards.

Mr Clattenburg indicates that a minimum of two minutes will be added on at the end of the first half.

Half time: Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 West Ham United

Spurs deserve their lead at the break. Dawson and Caulker have been solid and composed at the back, while Bale and Defoe have shown glimpses of attacking brilliance.

Spurs have registered 12 shots, compared to West Ham's four. Four of the hosts' attempts have been on target, while the Hammers have hit the target just once.

Tottenham have dominated possession with 58 percent and both sides have had one corner kick so far.

West Ham have committed seven on the game's 11 fouls and picked up two of the game's three yellow cards.

The teams are back out on the pitch and the second half is moments away.

Spurs kick off and the match resumes.

The hosts win an early free kick 35 yards from goal in a central position.

Spurs go close! Bale goes for goal and the ball dips incredibly at the last minute, missing the goal frame by inches.

Lennon darts into the box and his shot is deflected behind for a Spurs corner.

Bale's delivery is headed clear by Tomkins.

Chance for West Ham! Carroll's flick-on finds Jarvis via Nolan. The former Wolves winger volleys at goal from 18 yards, but Lloris does well to gather.

Chance for Spurs! Sandro finds Defoe in the penalty area. Defoe's low effort deflects wide for a corner.

Spurs take the corner short to Sandro, whose cross is poor and goes out for a goal kick.

Substitution for West Ham. O’Neil is replaced by Matthew Taylor.

Chance for West Ham! Nolan fires in a low cross from the right across the Spurs six-yard box. Lloris shows good bravery to get to it ahead of Jarvis, who was primed to tap-in at the far post.

Spurs hit the woodwork! Dempsey rattles the crossbar from the edge of the area.

Goal for Spurs! - Gareth Bale - Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 West Ham United

Seconds after Dempsey is denied by the woodwork, he produces a superb chipped pass into the path of Bale, who takes a touch before guiding the ball low into the net via the post from 10 yards.

Goal for Spurs! - Jermain Defoe - Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 West Ham United

Sandro wins possession just inside his own half. He then finds Dempsey, who slides the ball into the path of Lennon. Lennon evades the challenge of Tomkins and is through on goal. He squares the ball to Defoe, who passes it into the net from close range.

Final change for West Ham. Nolan is replaced by Carlton Cole.

West Ham look like a beaten side now. Meanwhile, Spurs are zipping the ball about beautifully and I would not be surprised if they added to their lead.

Chance for Spurs! Dempsey drags his shot across the face of goal from the right. On the stretch, Bale comes agonisingly close to tapping it home at the far post.

Substitution for Spurs - Dembele replaces Lennon.

Dempsey, who has had a very good game today, finds Walker on the overlap. The England full-back smashes the ball into the sidenetting. With three players in the middle, he definitely should have passed there.

Goal for West Ham! - Andy Carroll - Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 West Ham United

Carroll gets up and meets O'Brien's deep cross with a looping header, which goes over the head of Lloris and dips in at the far post.

That is Carroll's first goal this season and his first in the Premier League since April 10.

Sandro injures himself in the act of tackling Diame. The Brazilian is then stretchered off and replaced by Jake Livermore.

Spurs go close! Jaaskelainen makes a superb double save to deny Defoe and Bale.

There will be a minimum of five minutes added on.

West Ham go close! Reid's header from Tomkin's flick-on is deflected over the bar for a corner.

The corner comes to nothing.

Defoe will not be scoring a hat-trick today. He is replaced by Gylfi Sigurdsson, as Spurs make the game's final substitution.
