The hosts were the first to test the opposition keeper as Carroll found Joe Cole, who in turn found Matt Jarvis, but the former Wolves man directed his shot straight at Hugo Lloris.

Spurs took the lead just three minutes later as Bale continued his fine recent goalscoring form by firing his effort across Jussi Jaaskelainen from the edge of the box.

West Ham were level 10 minutes later when Carroll was brought down by Scott Parker inside the penalty area. The loanee striker got up to take the spot kick himself, slamming the ball emphatically past Lloris.

The visitors almost regained the lead right on the stroke of half time, but Steven Caulker's powerful header from Bale's cross was well saved by Jaaskelainen.
