There were chances at both ends during the opening stages, with Chris Rolfe coming close for the visitors and Jerome Mechack almost putting the hosts in front during an eventful three minutes.
Jeff Larentowicz could have given Chicago the lead in the 22nd minute when he picked up Rolfe's pass outside the area and let fly, missing to the left of goal.
The second half was a more lively affair, with Kansas almost taking the lead less than 10 minutes after the break through Paulo Nagamura, who forced an impressive save from Chicago goalkeeper Sean Johnson.
Kansas carved out another goalscoring opportunity in the 73rd minutes, with C.J. Sapong testing Johnson from outside the box after being lined up by Benny Feilhabe.
The hosts claimed the lion's share of the possession and had far more attempts on goal, but for all of their dominance, they could not find a way through.
