Southampton captain Jose Fonte: 'We could have beaten Chelsea'

Jose Fonte claims that better finishing in front of goal could have seen Southampton beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge following their 1-1 draw.

Southampton captain Jose Fonte has claimed that his side could have earned more than a point against Chelsea with some better finishing.

The Saints frustrated the Premier League leaders yesterday as they came away from Stamford Bridge with a 1-1 draw.

While he admits that it was a positive result for his team, Fonte believes that a more clinical edge in front of goal could have secured them all three points.

"I thought we deserved more than the 1-1," the defender told the club's official website. "We had good chances to score and unfortunately we didn't take them.

"When you don't take your chances against a Chelsea team that is so strong, we knew they would come back strong in the second half. We knew it would be difficult. It was a good game, it was a nice game to watch, I think. We take a point and it's positive, obviously."

Southampton continue their Premier League campaign on Saturday when they entertain Burnley.
