Shane Long goal downs Ipswich Town

A solitary Shane Long goal is enough to help Southampton edge out Ipswich Town and book their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Shane Long struck the only goal of the game as Southampton moved into the next stage of the FA Cup with a 1-0 win over Ipswich Town tonight.

The Irishman's opener on 19 minutes was enough to settle this third-round replay as the visitors set up a home clash with Crystal Palace in the next phase.

Ronald Koeman's side went into the clash on a high after ending a 27-year hoodoo in beating Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

However, the Premier League side were very nearly brought back down to earth after Noel Hunt had the ball in the net early on, only for it to be ruled out for offside.

The Saints recovered from that early scare and scored a legitimate goal on 19 minutes, however, when Long pounced on a loose ball inside the box to tap home at the near post.

They grew further into the clash from that point on, and it was almost two when James Ward-Prowse's deflected effort shaved the crossbar on 27 minutes.

David McGoldrick could, and perhaps should, have done better with a chance late in the first half after going for goal from an acute angle in Ipswich's only opportunity of the half.

With chances at a premium at both ends throughout the first half, the two sides continued to cancel each other out for large spells for the second 45.

However, Darren Ambrose threatened on 56 minutes after heading a Tyrone Mings cross straight at Fraser Forster, who comfortably saved in the end.

Mick McCarthy's Championship side struggled and ultimately failed to fashion further goalscoring opportunities, and the top-flight side held on to progress.
