Bristol City win opening match of League One season

Bristol City score a goal in each half to secure a 2-1 win over Sheffield United on the opening day of the new League One season.

Bristol City have beaten Sheffield United 2-1 in the opening match of the new League One season at Bramall Lane this afternoon.

The home side made a bright start to the match, but it was the Robins who broke the deadlock 20 minutes into the tie when Aaron Wilbraham pounced onto a Mark Little delivery, which had struck the post moments earlier.

Nigel Clough's side had a chance to get back on level terms when Stefan Scougall had an effort cleared off the line, while Frank Fielding kept out a Michael Higdon header.

The striker managed to score his first goal for the Blades a few minutes later though as he headed in from close range following a free kick.

Scougall had a chance to put the home side ahead shortly before the break, but headed just over from a Ryan Flynn cross.

The visitors made the stronger start to the second half, with Wade Elliott and Sam Baldock both creating chances in the opening 10 minutes.

Bristol City's pressure paid off inside the final 20 minutes when Wilbraham back-heeled the ball for Elliott, who volleyed the ball into the bottom corner to restore his side's lead.

The Blades thought that they had done enough to get back on level terms again in the 80th minute when a shot from Murphy was deflected onto the post.

Chris Basham also had a chance to earn the home side the draw when he tried to head in, but one of his own teammates managed to tap it wide.

The result gives Bristol City their first win at Bramall Lane for 57 years.
