Preview: Scunthorpe United vs. Blackpool

Sports Mole previews the League One clash between Scunthorpe United and Blackpool.

Scunthorpe United could climb into the top half of League One with a win over bottom-of-the-table Blackpool.

However, they face a Tangerines side still seeking their first win of the season and facing the possibility of a back-to-back relegations.

Scunthorpe boss Mark Robins is hoping to avoid a fight for survival for the second successive season as the Yorkshire club play out their final campaign at Glanford Park.

The Iron are set to move to a new purpose-built ground in the Lincolnshire Lakes area of the town, but United are in danger of playing their first game there in League Two.

Scunthorpe's season got off to the worst possible start as they lost at Burton Albion before being beaten on penalties by Barnsley in the League Cup.

Robins's men picked up their only win so far against fellow strugglers Crewe Alexandra, but United then suffered their biggest defeat of the season at Wigan Athletic.

Successive draws against Millwall and Colchester United have left the Iron just above the drop zone, but a rare victory for Scunny could see them into the top 12.

However, stretching back to the final day of the season, the Yorkshiremen have now won only once in their last eight games in all competitions.

Blackpool

Blackpool are facing the prospect of potentially dropping into League Two, only five years after facing Manchester United in the Premier League.

The Tangerines have struggled for form since the start of the season when they battled to a draw at Colchester United.

However, defeat at Northampton Town in the League Cup, where Neil McDonald's side conceded three before half time, started a miserable run.

They lost to Rochdale and Burton Albion at home before another defeat away to Sheffield United, but arguably their worst result came last weekend against Walsall.

Blackpool's 4-0 defeat to the Saddlers left the Tangerines with only one point to their name and without an away victory since beating Huddersfield Town in March 2014.

Their home form is little better, with only four wins in that time, but McDonald has dipped into the transfer market to bolster his squad with midfielder David Norris following his release by Yeovil Town.

Team News

Scunthorpe may look to make changes to their starting lineup after their Johnstone's Paint Trophy defeat at home to Barnsley in midweek.

Kevin van Veen and Darius Henderson could return in attack for the Iron, with Tom Hopper and Hakeeb Adelakun likely to make way.

Luke Daniels could keep his place in goal after serving a suspension, following his red card against Burton Albion at the start of the season.

Meanwhile, Blackpool may look to reshuffle their team after their humbling defeat to Walsall, although McDonald may decide not to rush back keeper Colin Doyle after a lengthy layoff.

Kwame Thomas, Jose Cubero and Jarrett Rivers – all of whom came off the bench against the Saddlers – are in contention for a start.

Cubero was due to be on international duty with Costa Rica, but is now available for the Fylde club.

Scunthorpe United possible starting lineup:
Anyon, Clarke, Goode, King, Wallace, Laird, McAllister, Bishop, Van Veen, Henderson, Madden

Blackpool possible starting lineup:
Letheren, Boyce, Aldred, Robertson, Ferguson, Cameron, Cubero, McAlister, Rivers, Thomas, Cullen

Head To Head

One crumb of comfort for travelling Tangerines fans will be their recent record against Scunny, having won eight and lost only one of their last 10 encounters with the Iron.

That solitary defeat came back in April 2006 when a 90th-minute Billy Sharp goal gave United the spoils.

Blackpool's last visit to Glanford Park saw DJ Campbell score twice as the Seasiders won 4-2 on their way to Premier League promotion in 2010.

We say: Scunthorpe 1-0 Blackpool

Scunthorpe's indifferent home form may present Blackpool with a great chance to pick up only their fifth league victory since March 2014, but one point from the Tangerines' first five games suggests that United could edge this encounter.
