Team News: Blackpool's Matt Phillips handed Scotland debut

Craig Levein hands Blackpool winger Matt Phillips his Scotland debut in the friendly against the United States in Jacksonville this evening.

Blackpool's Matt Phillips has been given his international debut for Scotland in tonight's friendly against the United States.

The 21-year-old has previously represented England at Under-19 and Under-20 levels before it was made known that he was eligible for Scotland and manager Craig Levein began to track his progress.

Levein told BBC Scotland: "You can bring in young lads like Matt Phillips, whose got an enormous amount of talent but he doesn't have experience. It's very difficult to give players experience without continually putting them in the team."

Hearts defender Andy Webster has been handed his first start in two years in Jacksonville this evening and Levein explained that the centre-back's club form had earned him the position in his starting XI.

"I just want to give Andy an opportunity to play, to give him some encouragement for the performances and the way he's done for Hearts this year and also just to give me confidence that we've got strength and depth," Levein added.
