Kirk Broadfoot handed English record 10-game ban for sectarian tirade

Kirk Broadfoot is handed a 10-game suspension after launching a sectarian tirade against then-Wigan Athletic midfielder James McClean in a Championship match last season.

Rotherham United defender Kirk Broadfoot has been handed the longest verbal abuse-related ban in English football history for a sectarian tirade against James McClean.

The former Scotland international will serve a 10-game suspension after launching an attack against the then-Wigan Athletic midfielder.

McClean has since come under fire for refusing to acknowledge 'God Save The Queen' in a recent friendly, but the incident with Broadfoot took place at the back end of last season.

It is understood that the 30-year-old, as well as his club Rotherham, cannot comment any further due to a confidentiality agreement put in place to stop anyone involved discussing the nature of the case.

Broadfoot's 10-game suspension surpasses the previous record handed out by the Football Association, which was held by Luis Suarez when he was forced to sit out eight Liverpool matches for racially abusing Patrice Evra in a Premier League game.
