Rennes 0-2 Montpellier

Montpellier move back to the top of Ligue 1 and a step closer to the title with 2-0 victory at Rennes.

Montpellier restored their three-point advantage at the top of Ligue 1 with a 2-0 victory at Rennes tonight.

Visitors winger Jonathan Pitroipa nearly opened the scoring on 13 minutes but his fine overhead effort cannoned back off the crossbar.

They weren't to be denied a second time though, as Souleymane Camara blasted home from close range following John Boye's blocked attempted clearance.

The table-toppers doubled their advantage shortly after the break when Remy Cabella's low shot struck the post before rebounding into the net off hapless Rennes goalkeeper Benoit Costil.

With the result, Montpellier move back above PSG, who had climbed to first following their 4-3 win over Valenciennes on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the defeat damages Rennes's hopes of qualifying for the Champions League but their current fifth-place berth will secure them Europa League football next season.
