Red Bull Salzburg thrash Ajax

Ajax are dumped out of the Europa League following a 6-1 aggregate defeat to Red Bull Salzburg.

Jasper Cillessen saved an Alan effort and Jonathan Soriano missed the target as the home side looked for an early goal.

It was almost 1-0 to Salzburg with just 10 minutes played, but Kevin Kampl smacked the crossbar with a curling shot.

Ajax struggled to get in the game in the opening stages, although Cillessen managed to keep the score level with a number of saves.

Kolbeinn Sigthorsson had a rare chance for the visitors which was saved, but again Salzburg pushed forward and hit the bar for a second time through Soriano.

Ajax were dealt an early blow in the second half when Mike van der Hoorn inadvertently diverted the ball into his own net.

That meant it was 4-0 on aggregate, but Roger Schmidt's side made it five when Sadio Mane slotted the ball under Cillessen.

Mane then got clear down the left and crossed to the back post to give Soriano a simple tap-in.

Ajax did manage to grab a late consolation through Davy Klaassen's deflected shot, but it is Salzburg who will face Basel in the last 16.
