Match Analysis: Real Madrid 4-0 Getafe

Sports Mole dissects the action as Real Madrid thump Getafe 4-0 at the Bernabeu on Sunday.

Real Madrid scored four times in the second half to thump Getafe 4-0 at the Bernabeu on Sunday.

A drab first period brought few clear chances for either side, although Madrid looked the more likely to open the scoring.

Madrid did eventually open their tally early in the second period when Sergio Ramos bundled home from close range.

The home side were simply too good from that moment as Cristiano Ronaldo scored three times in quick succession to wrap up a comfortable win.

Here, Sports Mole dissects the 90 minutes of action between the two Spanish sides.

Was the result fair?

Madrid deserved to win comfortably this afternoon. The first half was a slight non-event with few chances, but the Spanish champions were impressive in the second 45 minutes as they scored four times. Getafe never really offered any indication that they were capable of causing a threat, even in the latter stages when the tempo dropped.

Real Madrid's performance

Despite Madrid's well-documented troubles this season, they have started to find some serious form. They have now scored nine goals in their last two league matches, conceding none in the process. There were also some major positives with the performances of Ronaldo and Mesut Ozil. It could yet be a successful season for Madrid with much to play for.

Getafe's performance

Getafe looked like a team who had not won in their last eight matches. They defended in numbers in the first period and were therefore able to quell the threat, but they were demolished in the second 45 minutes. They managed just five attempts all afternoon, with Adan a passenger for much of the match. They are really struggling at the moment.

Sports Mole's man of the match

Cristiano Ronaldo: The Portuguese did not figure too heavily in the first period, but was simply stunning in the second as he scored three goals within nine minutes. He was replaced with 20 minutes to play in preparation for Wednesday's clash with Barcelona.

Biggest gaffe of the match

Getafe defended superbly in the first period, but simply fell apart in the early stages of the second as Madrid scored four goals in quick succession. Their poor run of form has now extended to nine matches without a win. But for their strong start to the season, they would be in relegation trouble.

Referee performance

Jose Gonzalez had a fairly productive 90 minutes of action. He was not called upon too many times throughout the afternoon, but he was quickly on the scene when needed. Neither team will have had any complaints about his performance.

What next?

Real Madrid: Madrid contest the first leg of their semi-final Copa del Rey encounter at home to Barcelona on Wednesday before returning to league action away to Granada next weekend.

Getafe: Getafe will attempt to end their horror run of form when they welcome lowly Deportivo La Coruna next Saturday, with Barcelona to come the following week.
