French striker Karim Benzema scores his first La Liga goal of the season to give Real Madrid the lead at the break against Rayo Vallecano.

A goal from Karim Benzema has given Real Madrid a 1-0 advantage at the break of their rearranged La Liga contest against Rayo Vallecano this evening.

The match had originally been scheduled to take place yesterday. However, issues with the floodlights at Rayo's Estadio Teresa Rivero ground resulted in the game being moved back 24 hours.

Madrid controlled early parts of the encounter and they eventually took the lead in the 13th minute. Angel Di Maria was the creator, drilling in a cross for French striker Benzema to score from close range.

Di Maria almost added to Madrid's tally moments later but he shot just wide from the edge of the box.

Rayo's best chance of an equaliser ended with Iker Casillas palming clear, before Xabi Alonso got back on the line to chest away.
