Real Madrid advanced into the final of the Copa del Rey this evening following a 2-0 win over Atletico Madrid in the second leg of their semi-final at the Vicente Calderon.

Los Blancos entered the match as the firm favourites following a 3-0 victory when the pair met in the Bernabeu last week.

Both goals tonight came in the first period when Cristiano Ronaldo twice converted from the penalty spot.

Was the result fair?

A narrow Real Madrid win was certainly a fair reflection of events in the Spanish capital this evening. Los Blancos came out the traps impressively and deserved to enter the interval with a comfortable lead. In truth, the second period was a slight non-event with both teams prepared to play in second gear. Atletico can take heart from the fact that they kept the score down with an under-strength XI.

Atletico's performance

It was always going to be a tough task to turn the tie around, but Diego Simeone would have wanted his side to avoid a third consecutive defeat this evening. Their first XI included just two of their regular starters this season, while they managed just one shot on target throughout the 90 minutes. Atletico managed to keep the score down when it looked as if Real Madrid would run away with it, but it was a lacklustre and tired performance from the hosts.

Real Madrid's performance

Another match, another win for Los Blancos, who are now 24 games unbeaten in all competitions since losing to Barcelona at the end of October. The tie was all but over when Ronaldo converted the first of his two penalties, but Ancelotti's side missed an opportunity to really hurt their capital rivals this evening. That said, they have become the first side to win in the Vicente Calderon this season and have still not conceded a single goal in this Copa del Rey campaign. Ancelotti could also afford to hand vital minutes to the likes of Isco and Raphael Varane.

Cristiano Ronaldo: The Portuguese showed nerves of steel as he twice dispatched penalties in the early stages of the contest. The forward might have netted his hat-trick in the second period, but missed a couple of half-chances. The 29-year-old also showed courage to return to the field in the second half having been struck with a lighter thrown from the crowd when he exited at the interval.

Biggest gaffe

Both Atletico full-backs had bad moments in the early stages as Real Madrid were awarded two penalties. First, Javi Manquillo clumsily felled Ronaldo from behind, before Emiliano Insua dived in late on Gareth Bale. The first was perhaps slightly harsh on second look, but the second was a really poor piece of defending from the Argentine.

Referee performance

As far as Atletico, Real Madrid matches go, this was a fairly simple night for Alberto Undiano. The Spanish official got both of the penalty decisions correct, while he was prepared to let the match flow in the correct areas. Just the four yellow cards were awarded this evening, which is an indication of his patience despite a couple of heavy challenges.

Atletico: Simeone's side will hope to return to winning ways in La Liga when they welcome Real Valladolid to the Calderon on Saturday afternoon.
