Football returns to Hampden Park following year-long absence

Queen's Park's match against Clyde will be the first game played at Hampden Park for more than a year.

Hampden Park today hosts its first football match for more than a year as Queen's Park take on Clyde in Scottish League Two.

The Glasgow venue was transformed into an athletics stadium for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, which meant that its pitch had to be uprooted.

Sports contractor SIS Pitches was brought in to lay down a new playing surface, paving the way for the iconic Scottish ground to host competitive football once again.

"The brief was to deliver a first-class playing surface in keeping with our status as Scotland's national football stadium," said Hampden Park managing director Peter Dallas in a statement.

"The fixture on January 3 will be the first opportunity the fans will have to see the new pitch first hand. Under the annual maintenance programme, SIS will continue to monitor the pitch to ensure it continues to be presented in the best possible condition."

Queen's Park head into the match in third place in the table, while Clyde are in seventh.
