Charlie Austin: 'Queens Park Rangers stay cost me England spot'

Charlie Austin believes that he will not make England's European Championship squad due to remaining at Queens Park Rangers for the 2015-16 season.

Queens Park Rangers striker Charlie Austin has said that his decision to remain at the club will cost him a place in England's European Championship squad.

The 26-year-old marksman, who was linked to a host of Premier League clubs over the summer, feels that his chances of being invited back to Roy Hodgson's squad are slim.

"The move was not right for me in the summer, I decided to stay at QPR," Austin told BBC Sport.

"Of course you have ambitions, but I have to realistic and take it one step at a time. I know the Euros are at the end of the season but the likelihood now is that I'm not going to be involved in that squad.

"That does not mean that I am not going to try and score as many goals as I can for QPR because our main aim is to get promoted. I believe we should be in the top six and if we fail to get in the top six it has not been a successful season."

The striker leads the Championship scoring charts for the 2015-16 season with seven goals in QPR's opening eight fixtures.
