Carlisle United stun Queens Park Rangers

Carlisle United have shocked Queens Park Rangers 2-1 to book their place in the second round of the League Cup at Loftus Road.

Jay Emmanuel-Thomas fired a low shot at goal in the 10th minute, but the striker's attempt was well held by Carlisle keeper Mark Gillespie.

Derek Asamoah responded for Carlisle when he flashed an effort just wide almost immediately after Emmanuel-Thomas's chance for QPR.

Sebastian Polter's powerful run presented him with a shooting opportunity just after the half-hour mark, but the QPR man could only blast well over the bar from the edge of the box.

Junior Hoilett was next to try his luck for the R's but he could only skew his shot wide after jinking inside from a wide position.

However, it was the visitors who took the lead when Asamoah swept the ball home against the run of play.

Carlisle's lead was a short-lived one though and it was Emmanuel-Thomas who struck his second QPR goal to even things up on 40 minutes.

Clint Hill almost gave Chris Ramsey's side the lead shortly into the second period, but the defender's header dropped just wide of the post.

Rangers nearly profited from another corner minutes later, but Polter's header was cleared off the line.

Alex McQueen's long-range effort then hit the crossbar for Carlisle as they tried to respond to their hosts' positive start to the second half.

Carlisle then took the lead on 79 minutes when substitute Jason Kennedy tucked the ball home from close range, and the visitors held on to book their place in the next round.
