Fabio Coentrao ruled out of World Cup

Portugal left-back Fabio Coentrao is ruled out for the remainder of the World Cup having picked up a thigh injury during the defeat to Germany yesterday.

Portugal left-back Fabio Coentrao has been ruled out for the rest of the World Cup after picking up a thigh injury in his side's opening match against Germany yesterday.

Coentrao pulled up during the second half of his side's eventual 4-0 defeat at the hands of the Germans, adding injury to insult for Portugal after Pepe had earlier been sent off for a clash with Thomas Muller.

The 26-year-old was replaced by Andre Almeida for the remainder of the match, before scans today confirmed that he is likely to miss the rest of the tournament.

"According to the tests, Fabio Coentrao is unfit for competition for a period exceeding the duration of the World Cup," read a statement from the Portuguese football federation.

Portugal's next match comes on Sunday as they take on USA in Manaus.
