Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa demands Newcastle United "prove" themselves

Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa says that Newcastle United need to have learned from their defeat to Manchester City earlier in the season ahead of their Capital One Cup meeting on Wednesday.

Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa has told his Newcastle United teammates that they must prove that they are worthy of wearing the shirt against Manchester City tonight.

The Magpies were thrashed 4-0 by City on the opening weekend of the Premier League season and go into this Capital One Cup clash off the back of a 2-1 defeat to local rivals Sunderland on Sunday.

However, Yanga-Mbiwa, who returns from suspension for the match, wants Newcastle to have learned from their previous hiding by City.

"We need to play and remember the first game with City," Yanga-Mbiwa told the press. "That helps us do well tonight to prove to ourselves and the fans this was a mistake.

"We must learn from it. If we play well we can go through. We all want to do well to help ourselves to move up and continue to do well."

The match kicks off at St James' Park at 7.45pm.
