Aston Villa are reportedly considering an approach for Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez as they search for a replacement for Steve Bruce.

Newcastle United boss Rafael Benitez has reportedly emerged as a surprise managerial candidate for Aston Villa.

The West Midlands outfit announced on Wednesday that Steve Bruce had been removed from his position in the dugout, with the club recording just three wins from 11 matches in the Championship this season.

Villa are said to be looking to find a replacement before the game against Swansea City on October 20, and according to The Mirror, Benitez could be on their radar.

The Spaniard guided Newcastle to 10th place in the top-flight standings during the last campaign, but the Magpies are without a win from eight matches in all competitions this season.

Benitez was left frustrated during the summer transfer window having failed to land a number of his targets, and the 58-year-old is yet to extend his contract at St James' Park past 2019.

Brentford boss Dean Smith and Belgium assistant Thierry Henry have also been linked with the vacant role at Villa Park.
