Player Ratings: Manchester United 0-0 Newcastle United

Sports Mole looks at who impressed during the goalless draw between Manchester United and Newcastle at Old Trafford.

Manchester United's 100% start to the new Premier League season came to an end at Old Trafford this afternoon as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Newcastle United.

It was the Magpies who came closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half despite spending much of the opening 45 minutes on the back foot, with Aleksandar Mitrovic hitting the crossbar with a header.

United also hit the woodwork late on through Chris Smalling, but they could not find a way past the visitors as Newcastle held on.

Here, Sports Mole looks at who stood out during an entertaining clash.

MAN UTD

Goal

Sergio Romero: Still yet to concede a Premier League goal, though he was well beaten by Mitrovic's header that struck the bar. No shots on target to face. (6/10)

Defence

Matteo Darmian: Bombed up and down the right flank all game and gave United an increased attacking threat, but his final ball was lacking too often. (6/10)

Chris Smalling: Unfortunate to hit the post late on with a towering header. Another commanding performance on the whole from the ever-improving centre-back. (7/10)

Daley Blind: Rarely called into serious action as United dominated. Had a decent tussle with Mitrovic now and again, refusing to be bullied by the striker. (6/10)

Luke Shaw: Like Darmian on the opposite flank, was never shy to get forward and had one effort that bobbled into the arms of Krul. (6/10)

Midfield

Morgan Schneiderlin: Played a big role in helping United to dominate, breaking up the rare Newcastle attacks and getting things moving forward for his side on a number of occasions. (7/10)

Bastian Schweinsteiger: Given a bit more license to roam forward than Schneiderlin, but still looks like he is short of full fitness. Tired as the game wore on and was withdrawn before the hour mark. (6/10)

Juan Mata: Tested Krul with a smart low drive in the first half. Often the most creative of United's midfielders, but his final ball left a lot to be desired at times. (7/10)

Adnan Januzaj: Heavily involved when United were cutting through Newcastle at will in the first half, but faded in and out of the game from then on before being withdrawn. (6/10)

Memphis Depay: Looked a real threat at the start of the match, giving Mbemba a torrid time. His finishing was poor, however, and ultimately he should have had a bigger say on the game than he managed. (6/10)

Attack

Wayne Rooney: Had a goal harshly ruled out for offside early on. Faded badly as the tempo slowed and could not get the better of Coloccini and co. (6/10)

Substitutes

Michael Carrick: Replaced the tired Schweinsteiger and helped United to maintain their dominance in possession. (7/10)

Javier Hernandez: Made his first Premier League appearance since the opening day of last season but spurned arguably the best chance of the match late on. (5/10)

Antonio Valencia: On for Darmian with just over 10 minutes remaining but could not help find a way through. (6/10)

NEWCASTLE

Goal

Tim Krul: Many of United's shots on target were straight at him, but he made a magnificent late stop to deny Hernandez and also saved smartly from Mata in the first half too. (8/10)

Defence

Chancel Mbemba: Struggled in the opening stages, with Memphis running rings around him. Grew into the match, however, and ended up putting in a good performance as Newcastle held out for the point. (7/10)

Steven Taylor: Helped to mark Rooney out of the game from around the half-hour mark onwards. A typically committed performance from the centre-back. (7/10)

Fabricio Coloccini: The man of the match. Threw himself in front of everything and was the epitome of Newcastle's frantic, but impressive, last-ditch defending. A real captain's performance. (8/10)

Massadio Haidara: Did not have the easiest of times with the dual threat of Mata and Darmian, but was given help by those in front of him. (6/10)

Midfield

Vurnon Anita: Didn't give his defence enough protection from United's relentless pressure as the hosts comfortably won the midfield battle. (5/10)

Jack Colback: Another who spent much of his time chasing shadows and, when Newcastle did get the ball back, he failed to calm things down and keep possession. (5/10)

Ayoze Perez: Was caught out defensively on a number of occasions early on, but put a great shift in eventually to continually track the marauding Darmian. (7/10)

Georginio Wijnaldum: Was a rare attacking threat for the Magpies, looking strong in possession and capable of causing United problems. Those problems never really materialised, though, and much of his time was dedicated to defensive work in the end. (6/10)

Gabriel Obertan: Neglected his defensive duties when trying to deal with Memphis early on but, like Perez on the other side, soon applied himself to the task at hand. (6/10)

Attack

Aleksandar Mitrovic: Earned himself a bit of a reputation already with two bookings within minutes of his two sub appearances so far, but showed that he is fully committed to the cause today. Led the line well on a difficult afternoon to be a Newcastle striker, and almost got the opener with a superb header. (7/10)

Substitutes

Florian Thauvin: Given a 20-minute debut, and Newcastle fans will be encouraged by what they saw. Got involved straight away and looks like he could be an exciting signing. (7/10)

Cheick Tiote: Brought on to help Newcastle hang on for a point, and managed to do exactly that. (6/10)

Papiss Cisse: Blew a late chance to steal all three points when a poor touch slowed down a three-on-one break. (5/10)
