A report claims that new Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is intending to use Wayne Rooney in a midfield role.

Louis van Gaal will reportedly use Wayne Rooney as a midfielder during Manchester United's pre-season tour.

It is believed that the incoming Dutch boss is keen to fit Rooney, Robin van Persie and Juan Mata into the same side.

He has earmarked Van Persie as a lone centre-forward, with Spanish international Mata in the number 10 role, according to The Mirror.

The report added that during United's tour of America next month, Van Gaal will attempt to fit Rooney into his team in a midfield position.

Rooney played in the centre of midfield on a handful of occasions under the management of Sir Alex Ferguson.
