Peter Schmeichel urges David de Gea to sign new Manchester United deal

Peter Schmeichel hopes to see David de Gea sign a new contract at Manchester United, although the Dane believes that a decision will not be made until the summer.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel believes that David de Gea will wait until the end of the season before deciding on his future plans.

The Spaniard has less than 18 months remaining on his current deal at Old Trafford, which has led to much speculation linking him with a move to Real Madrid.

It was reported earlier this week that the Red Devils stopper could pen a new long-term contract at United in the coming weeks, although Schmeichel, who made 393 appearances for the Premier League giants, thinks that De Gea's plans will depend heavily on how strongly the club finish this campaign.

"I hope he will sign but today's footballers don't decide on their own," he told the Daily Star. "They've got agents to advise them and I don't know what kind of advice he's getting. I suspect that he's just having a look at how this season is going to pan out.

"All I know is what I read from the media but the only thing I really can say is I hope he will sign. I hope he gives everybody that bit of good news because it would have another effect on many other future dealings with players so hopefully he will sign.

"I have no idea what he's like or how he likes Manchester or how he likes it here. You could excuse him for thinking it would be better to go back but I have no idea what his thinking is and at the end of the day it's probably the advice he gets from his agent that will make the difference between what he's doing."

De Gea has been a key player for Man United this season, starting every game for the club.
