Michael Carrick: 'Manchester United can still win title'

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick believes that the club can win the Premier League title this season following their 3-0 victory over Liverpool.

Michael Carrick has claimed that Manchester United can win the Premier League title this season following Sunday's victory over Liverpool.

Louis van Gaal's men recorded their sixth straight win with the 3-0 success at Old Trafford, which moves them to within eight points of Premier League leaders Chelsea.

Midfielder Carrick, who filled in at centre-back in the victory, believes that United will be prepared to challenge for top spot if they can continue their good form through the festive period.

"We are always looking at how we can get to the top," he told MUTV.

"All in all we are in a pretty decent position at the moment. We need to stay up there, we need to stay in touch, then come Christmas and come January, as we've said for many years now, if we are up there challenging then we will give ourselves a great chance."

United travel to Aston Villa on Saturday.
