Manchester City remain hopeful of signing Athletic Bilbao's Javi Martinez.

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini may not have given up hope of signing Athletic Bilbao's Javi Martinez.

The Sky Blues boss remains hopeful of beating Bayern Munich to the defender's signature after his move to the German club hit a setback, The Mirror reports.

Martinez was understood to be on the brink of signing for Bayern, but disagreement over his valuation has put the transfer on hold.

Meanwhile, Man City football administrator Brian Marwood has contacted his Athletic Bilbao counterparts in the hope of brokering a deal.

Martinez is expected to cost the Premier League champions in the region of £30m.
