The English champions, who were thoroughly dominant in the first half, broke the deadlock on 10 minutes when Sergio Aguero tapped into an empty net following some good play between Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri.

A dreadful defensive error from Davide Santon then allowed Javi Garcia to head City two goals in front six minutes before the break.

The Magpies improved dramatically in the second period and were rewarded on 51 minutes when Demba Ba nodded past Joe Hart from 10 yards.

However, City sealed their first win in four games 12 minutes from time when Pablo Zabaleta's low cross found Yaya Toure, who finished clinically from close range.
