Stevan Jovetic double helps Manchester City thrash Wigan Athletic

Two Stevan Jovetic goals help Manchester City to thrash Wigan Athletic 5-0 in the League Cup this evening.

Manchester City have advanced to the fourth round of the League Cup after thrashing Wigan Athletic 5-0 this evening.

Two goals from summer signing Stevan Jovetic helped the hosts to a comprehensive win.

After a bright start from Wigan, it was City who had the game's first chance. Dedryck Boyata saw his header saved though, before failing to convert the rebound.

City continued to create chances, with youngster Marcos Lopes firing against the crossbar, but were unable to edge ahead.

That was until the 33rd minute, when Edin Dzeko was released by Fernandinho and fired past Lee Nicholls from the edge of the box.

The away side responded well but the City defence remained largely untroubled.

Dzeko almost doubled his tally after the break but saw his 30-yard effort well saved again by Nicholls.

City did manage to score soon after, and it was down to Nicholls, who had kept the hosts at bay in the first half. The goalkeeper was unable to hold Jovetic's powerful effort and saw it squirm away from him and over the line.

Yaya Toure then added a third with what is becoming a bit of a trademark, whipping a free kick over the wall and into the top corner with 15 minutes to go.

Jovetic then got his second of the game, capitalising on poor defending from Ryan Shotton, and firing past the goalkeeper into the corner.

City were not done there and, as Wigan crumbled, substitute Jesus Navas skipped into the box and fired in from a tight angle to make it five.
