Roy Evans backs Raheem Sterling to start for England

Former Liverpool manager Roy Evans believes that Raheem Sterling deserves to be a starter for England at the World Cup.

Former Liverpool manager Roy Evans has backed Raheem Sterling to be a starter for England at the World Cup.

The 19-year-old winger enjoyed an impressive campaign for the Reds last season as they narrowly missed out on their first league title in 24 years.

While Roy Hodgson's starting lineup for Saturday's opener against Italy remains a mystery, Evans believes that Sterling has done enough to be part of the side.

"I would start him - no danger," he told Sky Sports News. "The lad has had a fantastic season and progressed week-in, week-out. His end product wasn't good enough before but he's improved on that and become a real top player.

"I hope he plays really well for England. It would be a great platform for him and he could end up being one of the top players [at the tournament]."

Sterling has won four caps for England since he made his debut in 2012.
