Xherdan Shaqiri 'wanted Liverpool move'

Xhedran Shaqiri admits that he was close to moving away from Bayern Munich in the summer, before the German giants pulled the plug on a potential deal.

Bayern Munich midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri has hinted that he wanted to join Liverpool in the summer amid much speculation linking him with a move to Anfield.

The 23-year-old starred for Switzerland at the World Cup in Brazil, which saw many Premier League clubs sit up and take notice.

Liverpool are said to have been among those interested in the player's services, with certain reports claiming that a deal had been agreed only for Bayern to pull the plug before a switch could go through.

Asked specifically about the situation by German newspaper Blick, Shaqiri said: "It was known that I wanted to do something in the summer. After the World Cup I felt that it would be better for me to try something new.

"I thought of a change and had a lot of requests. Then FC Bayern decided that I should stay. In that case, you cannot do much as a player. But I feel very good at Munich, too."

Shaqiri, who is rumoured to be the subject of a £20m bid from Tottenham Hotspur, has a contract at the Allianz Arena which runs until the end of next season.
