Phil Thompson backs "complete midfielder" Jordan Henderson to become Reds captain

Jordan Henderson will beat Martin Skrtel and become Liverpool's permanent captain next season, says Phil Thompson.

Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has backed Jordan Henderson to replace Steven Gerrard and become the club's official captain from next season.

The 24-year-old has been one of the club's best players in recent matches, and he scored a fine goal in Sunday's win over Manchester City.

Henderson is the heavy favourite to become Gerrard's successor, and Thompson believes that his current form will see him handed the role.

He told Sky Sports News: "Many will say it's looking as though he's done enough to get the armband already, but you have to work your way into the role and I think there's still a way to go yet.

"It's not cut and dried. I think it's between him and Martin Skrtel, who has been absolutely fantastic lately, so it's not set in stone, but I do think Jordan will get it."

He added: "He is becoming the complete midfielder, in many ways, and if he keeps scoring goals like he did at the weekend, well, my goodness, he's setting down a strong marker for that armband."

Henderson joined Liverpool from Sunderland in 2011.
