Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling is released on conditional bail after pleading not guilty to a charge of common assault, but will face trial in September.

Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling has been released on conditional bail today after appearing in court to answer a charge of common assault.

Sterling was arrested last night and held by Merseyside Police under suspicion of assault, with the 18-year-old remanded in custody overnight.

He appeared at Liverpool Magistrates' Court for a preliminary hearing this morning, entering a plea of not guilty to a common assault charge after an alleged altercation with girlfriend Shana Halliday.

The England international was released on conditional bail but will now stand trial, with the teenager ordered to reappear on September 28.

Sterling was named in Roy Hodgson's England Under-21 squad to face Scotland next week, but that place is now under threat.
