Martin Skrtel: 'Philippe Coutinho proved his quality against Chelsea'

Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel believes that Philippe Coutinho proved his importance to the club with his match-winning brace against Chelsea.

Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel has hailed the quality of Philippe Coutinho in his side's 3-1 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The Reds fell behind early in the match to a goal from Ramires, but Coutinho levelled just before the break and then fired Jurgen Klopp's men into the lead in the second half.

Christian Benteke netted the third goal for Liverpool to secure their first Premier League win under the tenure of the German, which Skrtel feels was much deserved.

He told the club's official website: "The big players show their quality in the games you need them. Maybe Philippe didn't play quite as well in the last few games but today he showed his quality and how important he is for this team.

"We didn't start well, we knew that. But I think after that ten minutes we started to play the game we wanted to and the [equalising] goal we scored was a massive help for us.

"In the second half we dominated, scored two goals, and won the game."

Liverpool moved up seventh in the table as a result of their victory.
