Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says that the Reds are a "long way off" challenging for the Premier League title and urges supporters to stop "looking backwards".

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has called on supporters to stop looking back at the club's history and understand that the Merseyside outfit are a "long way off" challenging for the Premier League title.

The Reds sit 13th in the league table following their 1-1 draw with Chelsea yesterday and are 15 points adrift of current leaders Manchester United.

"The reality is that we are a long way off in the league and I'm not even going to use the word 'challenging'," ESPN quotes Rodgers as saying.

"You don't need to be a rocket scientist to see that. We finished eighth last season and it will be fantastic if we can improve on that. That's the reality of where Liverpool are, I'm afraid, and it can't be easy for our supporters to accept that.

"We all know of Liverpool's great history but we can't keep looking backwards in the rear-view mirror. We have to look forward."

Rodgers has also insisted that the Reds will bring in reinforcements in the January transfer window.
