Gary Gillespie: 'Steven Gerrard needs replacing'

Gary Gillespie says that Liverpool need to replace Steven Gerrard's goal in midfield.

Former Liverpool defender Gary Gillespie has no doubts that Steven Gerrard's goals must be replaced at Anfield.

The Reds skipper has been deployed in a deep-lying midfield role by manager Brendan Rodgers, which has restricted his goal tally to just four strikes this season.

Gillespie believes that Rodgers needs to bring someone in to make up for the loss of Gerrard in a more advanced role.

"I think he's got a bit of a problem with Steven, in regards of where to play him to get the best out of him," Gillespie told talkSPORT. "I've watched him long enough to know that when he ticks, Liverpool ticks and the position that he's playing in is a little bit deeper and I personally think that suits him a little bit more now.

"I take it on board that we're short on goals in the team and you think Steven Gerrard is going to be the one to get you the goals but he's not going to get you goals if he's going to play in a deep-lying midfield role.

"It's down more to the other guys [to make up for that]. Young Jonjo Shelvey has been thrust upon the scene and he's found it difficult, I think, in recent weeks playing in a position, as an attacking midfield player trying to get in the box and score goals, which I don't think quite suits him. It's difficult to know where to play Steven Gerrard at the moment."

Gerrard has scored 154 goals in all competitions throughout his career at Liverpool.
