Damien Comolli: 'Jordan Henderson signing cost me my Liverpool job'

Damien Comolli believes that he was sacked from his position as sporting director at Liverpool due to Jordan Henderson's initial failure to settle at the club.

Former Liverpool sporting director Damien Comolli believes that he was sacked by the club over his signing of midfielder Jordan Henderson.

The 24-year-old joined the Reds from Sunderland in 2011 for a fee in the region of £18m, but failed to make any sort of impact at the club and looked on his way out of Anfield when Brendan Rodgers arrived the following year.

However, Henderson has since blossomed in a Liverpool shirt, becoming one of the first names on the team sheet.

"When we signed Jordan Henderson, he got so much criticism, I got so much criticism," Comolli, who was ousted from his position in 2012, told the Dublin Web Summit.

"I was never told why I was sacked but I was led to believe it was because we signed Jordan Henderson, and the owners were convinced he was not good enough."

Comolli has also worked with AS Monaco, Saint-Etienne, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.
