Brendan Rodgers: 'Daniel Sturridge unlikely to play again this season'

Brendan Rodgers admits that Daniel Sturridge has endured a "difficult" campaign due to various injury setbacks, and reveals that he may not play again this season.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has revealed that injury-plagued striker Daniel Sturridge may not play again this season.

The England international has endured a frustrating campaign, which has seen him start just seven Premier League games.

Sturridge was expected to make a comeback from his latest setback ahead of the FA Cup semi-final meeting against Aston Villa earlier this month, but that return date proved to be too soon.

During his pre-match press conference ahead of Tuesday night's meeting against Hull City, Rodgers admitted that he is unsure whether his star striker will play any further part for the Reds this term.

"It has been difficult for Daniel. He's a good lad who wants to play and be working and helping the team. It's just been one of those seasons for him where it has been very unfortunate," the Northern Irishman told reporters.

"We are going to have monitor that day by day and see where he's at. When he's been fit he's been brilliant for the team. We need to get to get him back fit for and consistently playing. But we will see if that's going to be this season or the pre-season."

Liverpool have five league games remaining this season as they continue to chase down a top-four spot.
