Early on, Liverpool striker Luis Suarez was the first to threaten when his long-range free kick whistled over the top.

The Hammers started to come into the match, but it was Liverpool who were within inches of taking the lead in the 19th minute when Suarez's cross-cum-shot looped over Adrian and came back off the crossbar.

Although West Ham were seeing plenty of the ball, they weren't testing Simon Mignolet as Daniel Sturridge blazed two efforts off target down the other end.

The deadlock was broken in the 44th minute when Steven Gerrard rolled home a penalty after James Tomkins had clearly prevented Suarez from cutting inside with his hand.

There was more to come in the opening 45 minutes as Guy Demel poked home to level the score.

Liverpool were furious and it looked like the goal might be disallowed as the assistant referee waved his flag to signal a foul on Mignolet, who dropped the ball to allow Demel to score.

Andy Carroll clearly struck Mignolet on the face with his arm, but referee Anthony Taylor overruled his assistant and allowed the goal to stand.
