Brendan Rodgers disappointed for Steven Gerrard after FA Cup exit

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers says it is a "shame" that Steven Gerrard will not leave the club with a fairytale finish following their FA Cup exit.

Brendan Rodgers has expressed his disappointment that Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard will not bookend his illustrious Liverpool career with an FA Cup title next month.

The Reds bowed out of the competition after suffering a shock 2-1 semi-final defeat to Aston Villa at Wembley this afternoon.

The final on May 30 would have represented Gerrard's last game for the club ahead of joining Los Angeles Galaxy, and Rodgers says it is a "shame" that he will not leave on a fairytale ending.

"Is it a shame? Absolutely," Rodgers told reporters. "I think he was doing everything he possibly could today to help the team.

"I thought he was excellent, collectively we did not perform well enough."

The Villans return to Wembley to face Arsenal in the final.
