Sports Mole looks at a packed opening day in League One, which featured wins for Leyton Orient, Oldham Athletic and Peterborough United.

Leyton Orient have grabbed the headlines on the opening day of new League One season with a thumping 5-1 win away at Carlisle United.

Dean Cox scored a late brace to help put Orient top of the table after the first round of fixtures, with Kevin Lisbie and David Mooney also on target.

Oldham Athletic claimed the most dramatic win this afternoon, surviving a late Stevenage fightback to start their campaign with a 4-3 success.

Despite coming from 3-1 down to draw level, Borough were beaten in the final few minutes, courtesy of a penalty kick from Jose Baxter.

Elsewhere there were mixed fortunes for the sides relegated to England's third tier, with Wolverhampton Wanderers held to a goalless draw at Preston North End.

Peterborough United got all three points thanks to an early goal from club-record signing Britt Assombalonga, while Bristol City drew 2-2 with newly-promoted Bradford City.

Fellow League One newboys Rotherham United shared a six-goal thriller with Crewe Alexnadra, earning a point thanks to a late drive from Lee Frecklington.

Gillingham had their home debut in the third tier spoiled by Colchester United, who triumphed thanks to a strike four minutes from time by Drey Wright.

Troubled Coventry City came close to finding a positive start at Crawley Town, coming from two goals down only to be denied by Michael Jones in the final six minutes.
