Matt Smith eager to earn new Leeds United contract

Leeds United forward Matt Smith admits that he is hoping an improved run of form will earn him a new contract.

Leeds United striker Matt Smith has revealed that his target is to hit top form in the run-in to earn himself a new contract at the club.

The 24-year-old has scored eight goals since joining from Oldham last summer despite failing to find the net since New Year's Day.

Competition for a place in attack has increased following Connor Wickham's arrival on loan, but Smith is still keeping his sights set on being offered a long-term contract.

"I'm settled here but I'm the type of character that's always trying to push myself," Smith told the Yorkshire Post "I'll never, ever rest and be happy. You always want more and to keep doing better.

"I've really enjoyed my time here and if anyone gets offered a long-term contract at a club like Leeds they'd be overjoyed.

"The thought has crossed my mind and I'd like to put in the performances which might warrant looking into that. That's up to me at the end of the day and I'm only going to be judged by what I do on the pitch."

Smith's current deal expires at the end of next season.
