Brian McDermott slams "public humiliation"

Leeds United boss Brian McDermott describes his team's 6-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday as a "public humiliation"

Leeds United boss Brian McDermott has described his team's 6-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday this afternoon as a "public humiliation" for the club.

The Owls raced into a 2-0 half-time lead through Reda Johnson and Atdhe Nuhiu, before further strikes from Connor Wickham, Christopher Maguire and a late brace from Caolan Lavery capped a "dreadful, dreadful day" for McDermott's side.

The loss comes just seven days after United bowed out of the FA Cup with a defeat to League Two outfit Rochdale, and the former Reading manager claims that he will go "back to basics" with his squad.

"After that, in a local derby, it's public humiliation as far as I'm concerned. It is a dreadful, dreadful day for us," he told reporters.

"It has to start on Sunday morning and I'll go back to basics with this team to do whatever we've got to do as a group.

"That was just unbelievable. It doesn't matter about being lower than the Rochdale game, that's just humiliating for all of us."

Leeds, who sit 11th in the Championship table, four points adrift of the playoff places, welcome leaders Leicester City to Elland Road next week.
